( KNZA )--The Hiawatha Board of Education has ratified a negotiated agreement with the Hiawatha Teachers Association for the 2012-2013 school year.
The board took the action following a short closed door session Monday evening.
The Teachers Association previously ratified the agreement.
Under the agreement, the base salary for a beginning teacher will increase $500 to $32,760. Plus teachers will receive movement on the salary schedule based on their experience.
An impasse had been declared in contract negotiations in June of last year. A federal mediator met with the two sides in July, however no agreement was reached.
Teachers had been working under the 2011-2012 contract.
