(KTNC) - The Omaha Public Power District has paid more than $29 million to the 11 counties it serves in southeast Nebraska. The $29 million paid this year is a record amount, up from last year’s $27.2 million.
The public utility detailed the amount of the payments it's making in place of taxes this year on Monday. OPPD determines how much it pays each year based on a percentage of its retail sales of electricity. Counties will use the money to help school districts, cities and other entities.
Among area counties, Nemaha County received the largest payment, at $37,351. Richardson County received a payment of $13,089, while Johnson County received a payment of $13,694 and Otoe County received a payment of $4,422.
Douglas County will receive the biggest payment of $23.6 million from the utility.
