(KNZA)--Brown County area businesses are reporting a past scam attempt reemerging in the local area.
Dating back to the 1970's, according to the debunking website snopes.com, the scam works like this: a private, or blocked, number phones a business with the caller then asking for the serial number of a computer printer, or other similar item, attempting to sound as though the call was expected. If the information is provided, and if the caller has enough information, cheaply made office supplies will later be delivered, along with a costly invoice.
The best bet, as with other such scams, is to provide no information and use only reputable firms for such business. However, employeees should be instructed to never provide such information, especially the name of the person who handles purchasing.
