Missouri Drivers License Changes Would Meet Federal ID Standards
(KLZA) Newly released documents show Missouri has taken steps to build a database of driver's license information that would meet federal Real ID standards.
The documents made public Tuesday by Republican Sen. Kurt Schaefer include a Dec. 12 letter from the state Revenue Department director to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. That letter says Missouri's security standards for issuing driver's licenses "are comparable to or exceed" those in the Real ID Act.
A 2009 Missouri law prohibits the state from complying with the 2005 federal law that set stringent proof-of-identity requirements for photo IDs.
Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon has denied that his administration is trying to comply with Real ID through a new licensing process that makes electronic copies of personal documents such as concealed gun permits.
