All Clear Given Following Atchison Co Courthouse Evacuation
04/12/2013

(KNZA)--Evacuation of the Atchison County Courthouse this morning, following the report of bombs in the building; however, following a search both inside and out, the all clear was given just minutes before 11:00, with no explosives discovered.

According to Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie, the District Court Office, located in the building, received a phone call around 8:15, with the unknown male caller stating that another person, located in Colorado, had called him, stating there were two pipe bombs placed in the courthouse.

No other information was provided by the caller.

The courthouse was quickly evacuated and the Kansas Highway Patrol was called to the scene with a bomb detecting K-9 who searched the inside of the courthouse along with the outside perimeter.

Ten minutes before 11:00, authorities revealed that nothing was found and employees were allowed to return to the building.

Although a definite suspect has not been developed, speculation is focusing on the Colorado connection of the phone call.  That's based on the fact that four suspects, arrested in recent days in connection with an airplane, landing in Atchison and allegedly containing a large amount of marijuana, were expected to appear in an Atchison County Courthouse courtroom this morning.

Assisting the Sheriff's Department and the Highway Patrol at the scene were the Atchison Police and Fire Departments.
