(KNZA)--An annual event, intended to see prescription drugs disposed of properly, will happen Saturday.
Known as National Take Back Day, the event is recognized by Brown County Sheriff John Merchant(Play Audio)
Merchant says unused and expired drugs can be dropped off at the Sheriff's Office from 10 until 2:00 Saturday as part of the initiatve.
However, Merchant's office accepts such drugs year round. Syringes, injectable solutions and illegal drugs are not included in the collection.
During Take Back Day, the DEA visits the Brown County Sheriff's Office to collect those medications dropped off both throughout the year, and during the annual effort.
They are then disposed of properly, instead of being thrown into the trash where they can be stolen or flushed away where they can improperly mix with the water supply.
Similar take down day collection sites are also being arranged by other agencies, at other locations across the region, also from 10 until 2:00.
Locally, that includes the Leavenworth Police Department, who will set up a collection box at Price Chopper at 2107 South 4th, in Leavenworth.
The Saint Joseph, Missouri Police Department will collect prescriptions at the East Hills Mall, while the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribal Police Department will also collect at their office, located at 16344 Q Road in Mayetta.
