Jury Trial for Highland Man Postponed in Death Investigation
07/02/2013

( KNZA )--The jury trial for a Highland man charged in connection with events surrounding a suspicious death has been postponed.

The trial for 51-year-old Morton Alfrey, which had been set for next week in Doniphan County District Court, has been rescheduled for October 2nd-3rd.

The Kansas Chief reports that defense attorney Bill McQuillan indicated in recent court action that there are on-going plea negotiations in the case.

Alfrey pleaded “ not guilty” in April to felony charges of aggravated intimidation of a witness and obstruction of apprehension or prosecution along with a misdemeanor count of unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcoholic beverages.

The charges arise from a party that authorities say was held at Alfrey’s home the night of January 5th, which allegedly included several minors consuming alcohol.  A Highland police officer responding to a call at the residence found the body of 30-year-old John Paul Jenkins.

Alfrey was arrested January 23rd following an investigation by the Highland Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

No charges have been filed against anyone in the death of Jenkins, who was also from Highland.

Alfrey is currently free on bond.
