(KMZA)--A 28-year-old Hiawatha man is facing numerous charges following what authorities say was an altercation with Sabetha police on Saturday.
It began when a resident reported that a man appeared to be intoxicated and laying in the middle of the street in the 500 block of South 5th.
A Police Officer arrived and found Rodney Scoggins, Jr. standing up and bleeding, apparently having suffered the injuries in an earlier altercation.
The Officer attempted to take him into custody, but he allegedly resisted as he was placed into handcuffs, allegedly breaking free and striking the officer in the face.
A Sabetha resident, and former Auxiliary Police Officer, was passing by the scene and, noticing the altercation, grabbed Scoggins and assisted the officer with getting him to the ground. Although the Officer had drawn his taser, he did not use it, as Scoggins was placed into custody. However, he allegedly refused to give up the fight, acting aggressively while shouting profanities and making violent threats towards police.
Ultimately, Scoggins was transported to the Nemaha County Jail where he was booked on charges including disorderly conduct, battery on a law enforcement officer, criminal threat and interference with law enforcement.
Scoggins remains jailed without bond.
The officer suffered a minor contusion to the face and a sprained wrist as the result of the altercation.
