Check Scam Bandit Now In Custody
07/24/2013

(KNZA/AP)--Kansas authorities say a man who impersonated law enforcement officers in a scheme involving phony checks has been captured in Oklahoma.

46-year-old Robert Helms, wanted for passing fraudulent checks and cashing fake payroll checks, was arrested Wednesday.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it happened as he made a check scam attempt at a Wal-Mart. The employee recognized one of the aliases used by Helms and called police.

Helms, a resident of Pittsburgh, Kansas, has been on run for most of this year, sought for targeting stores in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Oklahoma.

It was earlier this year that investigators says Helms came to the local area, allegedly committing the scam at banks in Sabetha and Holton on January 20th, and in Blue Rapids on January 24th.
