(KAIR)--Due to a tight Elwood budget, homeowners in the Doniphan County community are expected to pay more in property taxes next year, with the bill rising by as much as 50 percent.
City leaders, despite citizen concerns, say they held off on an increase for as long as possible.
Elwood Mayor George Mitchell tells KQ2 News the city needs an extra $150,000 to keep city services running.
He says over the past ten years, the loss of businesses have led to a decrease in sales tax dollars, while expenses, including the mandatory upgrade of the city's sewer system, have been high.
The owner of a $100,000 home in Elwood will end up paying an extra $140 next year for the city portion of their property taxes.
