(KNZA)--An early challenger to Governor Sam Brownback has emerged, with a Kansas woman filing to run for the office.
Tresa McAlhaney, of Bonner Springs has announced her intention to seek the Libertarian Party of Kansas’ nomination for governor in the 2014 election.
The Wyandotte County Chair for the state Libertarian party has selected the current Chairman of the Johnson County Libertarian Party, Grant Nelson, as the candidate for Lieutenant Governor.
McAlhaney has already completed the state paperwork required for the run, and brings with her a limited political background, but a wide range of other job skills, including substitute teacher, management, retails sales and restaurant manager.
The mother of four’s plan for the office includes job growth for Kansas by clearing the way for business.
A supporter of lower taxes, and less regulation, McAlhaney says that while the Brownback administration has moved in that direction, they’ve done so without making other needed adjustments and policy changes.
When it comes to education, McAlhaney says more voices need to be heard prior to reform, planning to take the matter to the teachers for their input on what she calls a “too restrictive state education policy.”
The Libertarian Party will decide their official candidates in April of next year.
