(KAIR)--Atchison residents will have a chance to weigh in on the city’s proposed 2014 budget during Wednesday’s special city commission meeting.
The public hearing will begin at 12 noon at city hall.
Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking says the budget he’s presenting—which calls for no change in the tax levy—includes several projects that will improve the economic vitality of the city.

Cocking says the budget also includes funding for improvements to the downtown area to include hiring a downtown mall coordinator—a proposal that’s drawing some push back from Commissioner Rita Hartman.
Hartman is proposing an amendment that would put the move on hold, opting instead for hiring a retail consulting firm to bring more businesses and jobs to downtown.
The city must submit a budget to the County Clerk before August 25th.
