( KNZA )--Unemployment was up in most area northeast Kansas Counties in July.
The Kansas Department of Labor Monday released the latest unemployment rates.
Locally, Atchison County had the highest jobless rate at 8.2 percent while Nemaha County had the lowest at 3.7 percent.
Atchison and Brown Counties were the only two area counties that didn’t see an increase in their unemployment rates in July. In Brown County, the unemployment rate stood steady at 5.6 percent. Atchison County’s jobless rate was down 1.7 percent.
Elsewhere, Doniphan County’s unemployment rate in July was at 7.3 percent; Leavenworth, 6.8 percent; Jackson, 6.7 percent; Jefferson, 6.6 percent; Pottawatomie, 5.8 percent and Marshall, 4.1 percent.
Statewide, the jobless rate rose to 5.9 percent in July, up from 5.8 percent in June. The unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in July 2012.
The rate increase is a result of fewer people working in Kansas at the same time there are more people in the available labor pool.
