( KAIR )--A report of a vehicle on fire sent the Atchison fire department to a residence located at 803 N. 14th street just after noon Monday.
Fire Chief Mike McDermed says when crews arrived, they found a pickup truck that was fully ablaze in the rear yard of the residence.
Once the fire was contained, the department began the investigation as to what caused the truck to catch fire.
Upon talking to the owner, it was discovered that he does finishing work, and had some finishing material and several rags inside of the truck. It is also possible that he flicked a cigarette into the cab where there were flammable materials, but he cannot be sure. Either one of these scenarios could have started the fire. The truck is considered to be a total loss.
Another nearby vehicle suffered some minor damage from the fire.
Also on Monday afternoon, fire crews responded to a call of smoke coming from the site of the recently demolished Steinlight laboratory on fourth street. Upon arrival, it was determined that a stray cigarette butt had ignited a small patch of dry grass. There was no damage reported.
It is important to remember that with the recent high temperatures, you should be conscientious of how you handle fire in dry areas.
