(KMZA)--The Nemaha Central USD 115 Board of Education this week heard a report on a new class offered at the Nemaha Valley High School.
Industrial arts teacher Bruce Stanley presented information on the Residential Carpentry Program---a new class available to juniors and seniors.
Over the summer, Stanley became a National Center for Construction Education & Research certified instructor. By having a certified instructor, students may enter a post-secondary college with a Career & Technical Education certification.
Stanley said Nemaha Valley High School is the only school in northeast Kansas that is certified. The certification will enable students to qualify for a $1,000 State of Kansas certification award that was made possible by bill passed by the legislature. Students must pass 18 tests for which Stanley is the proctor. To date, 100% of the students have passed four of the tests.
Each program must have a sponsor and the Association of General Contractors of Topeka has agreed to be the sponsor for Nemaha Valley High School.
Stanley said that halfway through the summer, he was contacted by an employee of the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital about the need for a maintenance building. The ten members of the class, under the direction of Stanley and community members, Shane Holthaus and Greg Elder, began work on the building about two weeks ago.
After the completion of the project, another project is being planned for the spring.
