(KAIR)--New details have been released on the demolition of the former U.S. 59 Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge.
The first demolition blast is scheduled Monday, September 30th, with the remaining blasts to be held on Friday,October 4th and Monday,October 14th. Each of the blasts will be at 9 in the morning.
The Kansas Department of Transportation says the general public will be able to view the demolition all three days from the Riverside Park area located off River Road, close to the Pepper Mill restaurant. This is the closest and the safest viewing point available. The riverfront park area can be reached each morning via Atchison Road east to River Road. Downtown streets will be closed starting at 4:00AM on each of the blast mornings. Those wishing to view the blast should be in place within the Riverside park area by 8:30 each morning.
Within the 1,000 foot blast area zone, all Atchison streets and the new U.S. 59 Amelia Earhart bridge will be closed to all traffic starting at 8:00 each blast morning. Traffic wishing to use the new bridge should plan for an alternate route during these three days.
Officials are asking residents and business owners around the perimeter of the blast zone to close their windows, turn off air conditioning units and cover all outside vents.
