(KTNC) - Household Hazardous Waste Collections are scheduled in southeast Nebraska. The collections begin Tuesday in Otoe County and continue through Friday.
Bobbie Meints with Five Rivers R-C-and-D says a company from Red Willow County will collect and properly dispose of the hazardous material.
Materials that will be collected include household cleaning products, lawn and garden chemicals, paint, used oil, flourescent light bulbs, and anti-freeze.
Items that will not be accepted include tires, appliances, science lab chemicals, asbestos, wood preservatives, PCB’s, or explosives. As this is a household hazardous waste collection, Meints says they also will not take large, commercial, quantities of items.
Meints says you don’t need to remove materials from their original containers before bringing them to the collection site, though she recommends transferring larger quantities into smaller containers. The containers will not be returned.
Collections will be held in nine communities, beginning Tuesday in Syracuse and Nebraska City.
Three collections will be held Wednesday: from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. behind the Auburn City Hall; from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Falls City, at the city parking lot near Prichard Auditorium; and from 4:00 till 6:00 p.m. at the County Shop at 305 South Nemaha Street in Humboldt.
On Thursday, collections are planned from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Pawnee County Shop in Pawnee City; from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson County Shop in Tecumseh; and from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the County Shop in Fairbury.
Another collection will be held Friday in Crete.
There is no charge to dispose of material during the hazardous waste collections. Funding is provided through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, with support from Five Rivers R-C-and-D and county and local governments in the Five Rivers service territory.
