New Hiawatha City Building to be Built
10/02/2013

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved the construction of a new building that will house the city’s public works and water departments.

The Commission Monday evening accepted a bid from Quality Structures Inc., of Richmond, Kansas, for the construction of a 80 by 160-foot wood frame building at a total cost $146,220.

It was accepted over a bid submitted by Todd Stallbaumer Construction, of Seneca, even through it was more than 88-hundred dollars lower.  Public works Director Dave Grimm said it didn't meet specifications and the construction company wouldn't be able to start work immediately.

The new building will be constructed on city-owned property north of 10th and Miami Streets.

Public Works Director Dave Grimm and Water Superintendent Rick Koenig recommended construction of the new building over the renovation of an existing 40-plus year-old building.   Grimm said the new building will allow the city to eliminate four buildings currently being used, saving the city more than $15,000 a year, and to have everyone under one roof.

Proceeds from the sale of the former city hall building, which the commission approved last month, will help finance a portion of the cost of the new building and the city will have to borrow the remainder.

Construction of the new building is expected to take 60 days and city crews will assist with the project.
