(KNZA)--A handicapped accessible fishing bridge will be constructed at the Hiawatha City Lake next year.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm informed the Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening that the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has approved a $20,000 grant for the project through their Community Fisheries Assistance Program.
Grimm applied for the grant earlier this year. The remainder of the $57,000 project cost will come from local funds. The city has agreed to contribute $20,000 and around $16,000 has been raised through private donations.
The commission authorized Grimm to sign an agreement accepting the grant.
Construction of the bridge is to be completed by June 2014.
Grimm says he also plans to seek a $5,000 local grant to install lights on the bridge.
