(KNZA)--A federal initiative focused on cracking down on Native American domestic violence nets a Mayetta man for his alleged crimes.
According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, 28-year-old William Wilson is indicted on federal charges of habitual domestic violence assaults that took place on tribal lands.
The indictment alleges that he assaulted his wife on September 7th on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's tribal lands in Jackson County.
Wilson was arrested following an investigation conducted by the Tribal Police Department.
According to the indictment, he has two prior convictions for domestic assault.
If convicted, he faces a maxium penalty of five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
Grissom, who calls domestic violence a “serious problem,” says his office is “determined to use every means available to protect women and girls in Indian Country.”
