(KAIR)--While the Oliver Twist style of orphanage may be a thing of the past, there are kids out there that are going from home to home, with no family or home to call their own. November is adoption awareness month, and Mary McClellan, a recruitment specialist with TFI family services in Topeka paints a bleak picture regarding the number of kids without a permanent home in Kansas. She says that there are currently over 6,000 children in the state in out of home care, meaning that they have either been placed with a relative or in a foster home. Of those 6,000 kids, 982 are currently up for adoption. She further says that in Atchison county alone, there are 42 kids in out of home care, and there are only 15 foster homes available.
McClellan also addresses the popular myth that potential adoptive parents are only looking for young kids. She says that this is true in most cases, but not all. She says that most start out by saying that they want the younger kids, but a lot of them will move up in age group, because they feel as though they can make more of a difference.
