(KAIR)--The Atchison library has been awarded a grant that seeks to honor a pivotal point in United States history. The $1,200 grant, which was issued by the National Endowment for the Humanities, was awarded to 473 libraries and museums across the country. Jennifer George, the adult services librarian for the Atchison library says that the grant was made available to honor the ideals and the struggles of the civil rights movement, and more specifically, to honor the fiftieth anniversary of Martin Luther King Junior's march on Washington. This program that was created in conjunction with these grants consists of four documentary DVDs depicting various aspects of the civil rights struggle. The library will be showing each of these documentaries through November and December.
The library also plans to use the grant money to organize events in the first part of next year as well, by showing clips from all four movies, and inviting a local scholar to come and facilitate a discussion with local residents about each clip.
The first movie the library will be showing is titled Slavery by another name, and it will be presented at the Atchison library on the evening of November 19th at 6:00.
If you would like more information on this presentation, or any of the others the library is organizing, you can call Jennifer at 913-367-1902.
