(KTNC) - It’s back to the drawing board for the Falls City Volunteer Fire Department, after the City Council made no motion to approve the slate of officers for next year Monday night.
Chief Ken Simpson presented the department’s recommendation to name himself as Fire Chief, Jon McQueen First Assistant Chief, and John White Second Assistant Chief. The recommendation is based on a popular vote of department members.
Questions were raised whether White was the best choice as Second Assistant Chief. Matt Beer was the Second Assistant Chief this past year. After discussion, no motion was made to approve the slate of officers as presented.
The City Council did approve a Board of Public Works Recommendation to construct what’s called a collector well. Utility Superintendent Alan Romine said they’re redoing the well field, and the BPW recommended building the collector well rather than four vertical wells, despite a higher initial cost. Romine said the collector well would cost approximately $200,000 more to build, but has a higher capacity and would have lower maintenance costs over the life of the well.
The city now has 10 vertical wells. Romine said they try to clean two wells each year.
In other action, the council approved two requests to rent Prichard Auditorium for wedding receptions next year and allow alcohol to be served. They also approved a request from Community Medical Center to rent the Auditorium for a holiday party on January 10 and allow alcohol to be served.
The council also approved a request from First United Methodist Church to block off parking stalls on the north side of 17th Street for a Nativity Scene on December 15. And the council approved the second reading of an ordinance regulating the parking of detached trailers or dumpsters on city streets.
