(KAIR)--It was a special homecoming in Atchison Tuesday.
It's been since last March that 18-year-old John Shankman has been away from home, recovering from a devastating wreck that left him with severe injuries.
A senior at Maur Hill-Mount Academy at the time of the accident, Shankman, and his parents were welcomed home Tuesday by family, friends, co-workers and fellow students.
Arriving at their north side residence, complete with police escort, Shankman's mother, Kim, expressed her joy in receiving the warm welcome.
The Shankmans arrived to see balloons, a “Welcome Home John” sign and decorations of John's favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, lining the walkway into their home.
The house, in recent months, was renovated, with a special addition added on, to meet John's needs. That effort was completed through volunteer time and energy.
The Shankman's arrived in Atchison following John's release from the Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital in Gardner, Kansas.
