(KAIR)--The longstanding tennis courts at Atchison's Reisner Park are being removed.
That follows a 4 to 1 vote of the Atchison City Commission Monday.
City Manager Trey Cocking cites the original construction and placement of the courts, leading to long running drainage issues leading to damage, as the key to the decision.
Constructed in the late 1950's, early 1960's, on an area that slopes down into the creek that sits behind the park, the courts have long incurred water damage, making repair work costly and hard to keep up with.
Cocking says the cost of repair would be nearly $60,000, while total replacement carries a pricetag of $80,000.
The usage of the courts has also fallen drastically over the years, making it difficult for the city to validate those costs.
Along with that, Cocking says the city's Bromley Park has properly constructed, well maintained courts to serve the needs of tennis enthusiasts.
However, he says if tennis grows in popularity, creating a need for new courts, the city will explore the possibility of relocating to a different area inside Reisner Park.
The lone no vote for removing the courts was cast by City Commissioner Rita Hartman, a strong park proponent.
