(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission hires a new employee for a new position; however, the commission says the hiring will save money, while creating efficiency, in the long term.
Chairman Jeff Schuele says hired Tuesday on a unanimous vote is Chris Channel who will serve as Atchison County Coordinator. “Primary duties that he would have would be budgetary, finance, accounting, payroll, human resources,” Schuele says. “Key roles that a typical manager would fulfill.”
Channel formerly served the county as a budget consultant.
Schuele says the new managerial role, which the commission had already budgeted for, is becoming more commonplace within county government.
Hired on an annual salary of $50,000, plus benefits, Schuele says Channel, in the new position, will not add additional cost to the taxpayer. “As far as net new positions or jobs, and total salaries, it's going to be about even, actually slightly less,” says Schuele. “What we did for 2014 is some of the duties that were previously carried out by the Clerks Office have been shifted to the County Coordinator so we're actually going to be slightly saving some money.”
Channel's duties will continue to grow heading into 2014, with his acquisition of the responsibilities once handled by the County Clerk expected to expand by the end of next year.
