(KTNC)--Transportation safety programs in northwest Missouri will soon be able to apply for grants from the Northwest Regional Coalition for Roadway Safety. This is the third year the coalition is making funds available to help in its effort to reduce injuries and fatalities on roads in a 20 county area of northwest Missouri.
The director of the coalition’s Northwest Region, Jackie Spainhower, says various groups have shown an interest in working to improve safety on the area’s roads. She says they hope to identify local safety efforts and new partners to ensure drivers arrive safely at their destinations.
Organizations eligible to apply for grants include schools, community groups, law enforcement, and health departments. Programs eligible for the grants must identify at least one of the Blueprint-identified emphasis areas. Those include serious crashes, high-risk drivers and occupants, special vehicles, vulnerable roadway users, and special roadway environments.
The coalition has awarded more than $85,000 to groups throughout the region in the past two years. They will award almost $50,000 during this round of funding.
Completed applications are due by January 31. Awards will be announced in February and grant funds must be spent by June 15, 2014.
