(KNZA)--Holton residents expecting to a pay a little more for purchases starting January 1st will be waiting until April due to state requirements.
That follows voter approval in November of a one-half percent city wide retailers sales tax to fund maintenance of public infrastructure and pay down outstanding debt.
Although the increase was intended to take effect at the first of the year, City Manager Bret Bauer says that can't happen due to state law. The Kansas Department of Revenue contacted the City of Holton and explained that the state requires a 90 day time period to elapse before a sales tax becomes effective.
That means the extra percentage will begin to be paid on April 1st of this year.
The sunset date of December 31st, 2023 remains in place because it was specified on the ballot.
The sales tax increase is projected to generate nearly $390,000 annually.
