B & B Legacy and Roy Heiman Memorial Scholarships
05/05/2020

The B & B Legacy Scholarships awarded three $1,000 scholarships through the Nemaha County STEP Foundation this year to graduating seniors who previously attended B & B School.

The Legacy Scholarships are a result of a challenge presented to the St. Benedict and Baileyville communities and alumni by Dr. August Bergman during the 2006 graduation ceremony. Thus, began the fundraising to match Dr. Bergman’s seed money of $25,000. During the fundraising, another graduate Albert Wietharn offered an additional $25,000 if the communities would match his gift.

Both challenges were met, and the $100,000 was exceeded. The B & B Legacy Scholarships became a reality due to the dedication and generosity of the alumni and communities of St. Benedict and Baileyville.

This year’s recipients are from Nemaha Central High School.

Allison Koch, daughter of Barry and Jessica Koch of Seneca, plans to attend a vocational school and major in Dental Hygiene.

Nate Deters, son of Michael and Beth Deters of Baileyville, plans to attend Southeast Community College and major in an agriculture program.

Bradley Schmitz, son of Kenny and Diane Schmitz of Baileyville, plans to attend North Central Technical School and obtain a master electrician degree.

The Nemaha County STEP Foundation is proud to announce the first recipient of the Leroy “Roy” Heiman Memorial Scholarship. The Heiman family partnered with STEP to honor Roy. Eric Hammes, son of Brad and Glenda Hammes, plans to attend Kansas State University and plans to pursue a career in Engineering.

The Nemaha County STEP Foundation is honored to be able to assist in awarding these scholarships to these students. STEP strives to assist in helping caring citizens develop ways to help others and leave a lasting legacy.
