(KTNC)--Health alerts continue at several southeast Nebraska lakes, due to excessive levels of toxic blue-green algae.
Alerts continue at Kirkman’s Cove Recreation Area near Humboldt, Iron Horse Trail Lake near DuBois, and Big Indian Creek Lake in Gage County. An alert has also been issued for Lone Star Lake in Fillmore County and an alert is in effect for Willow Creek Lake in Pierce County.
Samples taken this week showed Iron Horse Trail, Big Indian Creek, Lone Star, and Willow Creek lakes were above the state’s health alert threshold of 20 parts-per-billion.
Kirkman’s Cove tested below the threshold, but the lake had high readings last week and lakes on health alert status must test below the threshold level for two consecutive weeks before the alert is lifted.
Beaches at the lakes are closed during the alert. Boating and fishing are permitted, but people should refrain from activities that could result in swallowing the water, and to avoid full immersion in the lake water.
Other public areas – for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities – are open.
