Huskers Receive Weekly Big Ten Honors

The Nebraska baseball team picked up its first Big Ten weekly honors Monday, as junior Josh Scheffert was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Pat Kelly was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Scheffert carried the Huskers to a 5-1 record last week with a .650 batting average. He totaled 10 RBI's and nine runs on three home runs and two doubles, including a career-high five hits against Louisiana Tech on Saturday. He reached base safely in his final 13 plate appearances of the week.  Scheffert notched a slugging percentage of 1.200 and an on-base percentage of .682 for the week.
Kelly played in four of the Huskers' six games last week and hit .571 with one triple and two home runs. He opened the week against No. 18 Cal and roped a bases-loaded triple that helped the Huskers post a 9-5 win to split the four-game series with the Bears. Kelly produced his first career home run the following day against South Dakota State in a 12-3 win. In two games against Louisiana Tech, the Red Wing, Minn., native was 4-for-6 with one home run and three RBIs. His second home run of the season came in the series finale against the Bulldogs and capped a five-run fourth inning that gave the Huskers the lead.
Now 14-7 on the season, the Huskers open a two-game series at Hawks Field today with Northern Colorado at 6:35 p.m. NU opens Big Ten play this weekend when the Illinois Fighting Illini come to Lincoln for a three-game series that starts on Friday at 6:35 p.m. As part of the conference opener, fans will be treated to fireworks after the game on Friday.
