Jackson Co Sheriff Tim Morse and Deputy Brian Roush oversee inmates at work in the Thompson Burns Cemetery.
A spring clean for a rural Jackson County cemetery that otherwise would go without maintenance.
The work is conducted not by a cemetery board, as the Thompson Burns Cemetery does not have one.
Instead, Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says the labor is provided by four low-risk inmates, known as trustees, who worked through the day Friday trimming and mowing the property(Play Audio :33 seconds)
Morse says the County Commission, during recent discussion, made him aware of the cemetery's lack of attention.
In the past, the local Lions Club worked to preserve the location, along with efforts from the Jackson County Road and Bridge and Weed Departments.
Those past efforts led to the repair, and re-positioning of many of the aging headstones.
Morse says the cemetery is only one of a handful of projects being attended to by the inmates(Play Audio :22 seconds)
Morse says the inmate labor also serves as cost savings to the county taxpayers, allowing work to be completed where manpower might otherwise be unavailable.
