Seneca Holds for Win as Doniphan County Makes Late Run
Seneca was in control of the league matchup last night against Doniphan County through it's entirety until Doniphan County started to make a comeback, but ultimately Seneca would hold on for the 6-4 win.
Doniphan County was quieted for most of the game behind the stellar pitching outing from Seneca's, Cody Heiman who pitched six innings of scoreless baseball, only allowing three-hits and five total baserunners in those six innings, while striking out 13. Things started to unravel for Seneca though when they switched pitchers to close out the game, as Heiman had things over to Michael Rottinghaus in the seventh.
Doniphan County would take advantage of the pitching change getting to Rottinghaus for a pair of hits and walks and four-runs in the bottom of the seventh. Erik Sperslage, then came in to fully close out the game, but at that point only two runs had scored, then a costly Seneca error helped Doniphan County plate two more with two outs, before Seneca ultimately shut the door, for the 6-4 win.
Seneca lead it throughout, as they had the bases loaded in the first but weren't able to plate any runs out of that chance. They would get their first run in the game in the third off an RBI-single from Michael Ohlsen, scoring Heiman. Then Seneca would extend their lead with a four-run fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Heiman. Seneca would go on to add one more in the sixth, to lead it 6-0 going into the seventh, when Doniphan County would try and muster the comeback but ultimately fall short.
Kolby Scott led the offense for Doniphan County with a 2-4 night with two RBI's, while Sawyer Adkins, Derek Nold, Zach Langford and Colton Masters each tallied a hit, also.
For Seneca, Heiman had the stellar pitching outing and also produced with the bat going 1-3 with a triple, two runs scored, two RBI's and a walk, earning him the McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors. His teammates Ohlsen and Sperslage each tallied two hits apiece; Ohslen went 2-4 with two RBI and Sperslage was 2-2 with a run scored and walk.
Seneca improved to 15-4 with the win (7-3 league), while Doniphan County fell to 5-13 (4-6 league) with the loss. Up next for Seneca is a league double-header Sunday at home versus Atchison at 4:00 and 6:00pm. Next for Doniphan County is also a double-header on Sunday against Sabetha in Wathena at 4:00 and 6:00pm.
