Planning Commission Talk Signs

(KAIR) -- The Atchison Planning Commission on Wednesday held a workshop on looking to reform regulations of signs in the community.

Commissioners examined regulations of communities such as Olathe, Saint Joseph and Ketchum, Idaho which varied in their level of restrictions.

Commissioner Derek Franklin suggested for the Atchison policy, the more simple policy, the better and suggested a provision to have signs removed immediately from closed businesses.

Commissioner Mike McCloskey had a suggestion when it came to electronic signs.

Community Development Director Stefanie Leif says they will examine more communities and will bring the issue up again in future meetings.

Planning Commissioners also held discussion to possible amend the 2004-2015 comprehensive plan.

Leif says there were revisions in 2006 and 2007 and says they may explore creating a new plan in two years as census related data hasn’t been updated since 1999 and maps since 2003.

Commissioner Franklin was in on the development of the current plan and says they need 24 months to put together a complete new plan.

Discussion to have the proper consultant for the plan was also discussed.

Leif says she plans to make initial steps for modifying the plan soon.

Commissioners also unanimously tabled a setback variance application for Richard and Loretta Pennington until the August 1st meeting.

Leif explains the issues that prompted the tabling.

Commissioners also unanimously approved issuing a conditional use permit for a home-based bakery at 1649 Beechwood Drive for Tammy Allen.
