Atchison Commission Pass Budget, Airport Layout
07/17/2012

After hearing no public comment for the 2013 Atchison city budget, City Commissioners unanimously passed the 18-point-seven million dollar measure.

A majority of the meeting was taken discussing the layout plan to modify and expand the runways at the Amelia Earhart Airport.

They heard a presentation from Michael Waller, Project Manager from Kansas City aviation group, Lochner.

He describes what the new proposal will do to the runway.

Waller also says the FAA reports 16 thousand takeoffs and landings a year, with a goal from the new plan to grow to 23 thousand.

Those statistics were debated by several, claiming that there’s very little daily flight activity.

A citizen that lives by the airport asked if the access road will remain open and she was told it will be.

Commissioner Jack Bower supported the measure, but added this comment.

Commissioners voted to adopt the runway plan four to one with Commissioner Purcell voting nay.

Commissioners also tabled a request to purchase a seven thousand dollar zero turn mower for the water plant, where commissioners requested to see if mowing can be done in-house by a city employee or contract it out as a cheaper option.

They also unanimously approved the purchase of three water intake pumps and a bid for the purchase of pipe and parts for the water tower fill line.

Commissioners also appointed Michael Surritt, Denise Surritt and John Bishop to the tree board and extended the terms of planning commissioners Dana Davis and Gary Kearney, Junior.
