(KAIR) -- The Centers for Disease Control is coordinating a multistate investigation of meningitis among patients who received a steroid injection.
Some medications used in these treatments have been linked to 35 cases of fungal meningitis, including five deaths, across the United States.
Twenty-three states may be at risk, however, none are states in the immediate region.
The steroid in question is Methylprednisolone.
According to Pharmacy Director at the Atchison Hospital Elizabeth Smith, their pharmacy staff has been flooded with calls of concern.
For this reason, they wanted to inform the general public that Atchison Hospital Pharmacy and the Atchison Hospital Clinics have never had this product on their shelves and the products they do have are safe for use.
Smith says they have never carried this product, citing that it’s a compounded product obtained from a pharmacy located in Massachusetts.
The hospital gets their Methylprednisolone directly from the manufacturer, Pfizer.
