(KLZA) The Missouri Department of Transportation is pleased to announce that the final route closed due to the flood of 2011, Holt County Route 111, is now open to all traffic.
While it's been quite a while since the disastrous flooding of 2011 made headlines, the people of Northwest Missouri continue to rebuild lives disrupted by the historic flood. The Missouri Department of Transportation has also been working to restore traffic on all the routes that were impacted by the flooding, but the process has not been easy, nor without cost. The total estimated cost for all flood repairs is approximately $17 million.
Beginning in June of 2011, more than 70 miles of Missouri highways closed when they were inundated with water and debris from emergency water releases far to our north. And unlike other floods, the waters did not quickly rise and fall. It stayed, in some places for months, and often had a current as strong as the Missouri River itself.
It decimated farmland, towns, and highways, sweeping away large sections of roadway that could not be evaluated, designed and rebuilt until floodwaters fully receded.
