Adams Selected Speaker of Nebraska Legislature
(KTNC) - The Nebraska Legislature opened its session Wednesday by electing a new leader. Senator Greg Adams of York was elected as Speaker.
Along with a new Speaker, the new session will bring new issues to the legislature. Adams says the top issue facing the legislature this year is the two-year budget. (play audio :21)
Within the budget is the issue of whether to expand Medicaid under the new federal healthcare law. Governor Heineman opposes expansion. (play audio :18)
Another budget issue will be Governor Heineman’s agreement to increase state funding for colleges in exchange for a two-year tuition freeze.
Adams says he has a respectful relationship with the governor. (play audio :17)
Adams is a retired high school government and economics teacher who was elected to the Legislature in 2006. He has served as chairman of the legislature’s education committee. Adams replaces Norfolk Senator Mike Flood as Speaker.
