Three Cited for Nemaha County Thefts
01/24/2013

(KTNC) - A vehicle reported stolen from the 700 block of Central Avenue in Auburn Wednesday morning was recovered later that morning, and three youths have been cited for that, and other, thefts in Nemaha County.
The Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office says they received several calls late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, regarding thefts from vehicles in Auburn and Peru.  The Sheriff’s Office says alert citizens who reported suspicious activity resulted in the recovery of the stolen vehicle later Wednesday morning.
An investigation by the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department and information received from area citizens led three male juveniles to be cited for the thefts on Wednesday evening.
The Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department says the recent thefts from vehicles appear to be “crimes of opportunity,” where thieves look for unlocked vehicles or locked vehicles with the keys left in them.  They say cases where entry to a vehicle was gained by force have been infrequent.
Vehicle owners are reminded that removing keys from and locking vehicles will not prevent all thefts but will prevent these “opportunistic” thefts.  Officials also caution that high value items or firearms should be left in an unattended vehicle with great caution, and should not be stored in plain view.
If you are the victim of a theft, or if you notice suspicious activity, you should contact authorities when the crime is discovered or when the activity is observed.
