(KAIR) -- At 12:39 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, Aurora, Colorado Police Chief Daniel J. Oates and his department began receiving 9-1-1 calls regarding a mass shooting at a movie theater.

Police responded quickly and Chief Oates’ officers had the suspect in custody within five minutes.

In the end, the alleged shooter had killed 12 people and wounded 58 others. The story made national headlines.

Although the trial is still ongoing, limiting what he can say, Oates will make an appearance at Benedictine College for a special presentation Monday evening at seven in the McAllister Board Room on the fourth floor of the Ferrell Academic Center.

Oates became police chief of the city of Aurora, Colorado, in 2005 and oversaw a 30% decrease in the crime rate in his first five years.

Prior to his position in Aurora, he served as the Chief of Police and Safety Services Administrator for the City of Anne Arbor, Michigan.

A native of New Jersey, he started his law enforcement career with the New York City Police Department.

His presentation, sponsored by the Benedictine College Department of Sociology & Criminology as well as the Department of Political Science, is free and open to the public.
