Area Reacts to Pope Benedict XVI’s Upcoming Resignation

(KAIR) -- It was a mixed bag of reactions from the public when news came to the U.S. early Monday morning about Pope Benedict XVI’s intention to resign from the post at the end of the month.

That’s Doctor Matthew Ramage, Assistant Professor of Theology at Benedictine College in Atchison describing the beginning of each of his classes Monday.

He’s no stranger to the Pope, as he focused his scholarly expertise on the works of Pope Benedict.

Last semester, Ramage taught abroad in Florence and was part of an audience with the Pope.

Ramage believes the Pope put a great deal of thought in his decision.

The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415.

Now, a meeting of the College of Cardinals to elect the next pope will be held,  known as a "conclave."

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said there would be elections sometime in March and he anticipated that there would be a new pope before Easter.
