Buchanan Co Passes Use Tax
04/03/2013

(KAIR) -- Buchanan County voters Tuesday passed a special question by 73 votes which allows a use tax on out-of-state sales.

The tax was back on the ballot after falling short four times in a row already.

KQ2 News reports county leaders hoped it would have a better chance if they kept it separate from the City of St. Joseph's push to adopt a use tax like it was in November.

The use tax will provide revenue lost from the sale of out-of-state purchases where no local tax is applied.

It will be levied at the same rate as the county's sales tax, 1.1 percent and have a 10-year sunset clause.

It's largely seen in out of state auto sales and online purchases.

Only 13 percent of registered voters voted on the question.
