Atchison Woman Pleads No Contest to Horse Cruelty
05/15/2013

(KAIR) -- A rural Atchison woman charged in a horse cruelty case has entered into a plea agreement.

Lynn Westmoreland pleaded no contest Wednesday to one count of animal cruelty just prior to her scheduled bench trial.

In exchange, three other animal cruelty counts were dismissed.

Westmoreland was cited for not taking proper care of horses on property she was renting in rural Atchison.

The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office intervened in February after a neighbor found one of the horses dead in their pool. Authorities believe it got loose seeking water and fell through the tarp while drinking water that accumulated on the tarp.

Authorities say the surviving horses were malnourished and without the proper amount of food.

Sentencing is set for June 17th.
