(KAIR) -- One of the more intriguing issues set to be discussed at Monday's Atchison City Commission meeting will be behind closed doors.
Commissioners are set to meet in executive session to discuss policies regarding concealed gun use at City Hall and other municipal buildings.
Those buildings include the Santa Fe Depot, Heritage Conference Center, City Shop, and the Water Treatment Plant.
As of July 1, unless the municipality sends a letter to the Attorney General requesting an extension of time to assess the buildings security, all municipal buildings must allow concealed carry weapons.
If they want an extension of time, they must send the letter by the end of the month and then they will have until January 1, 2014 to decide.
If they don't, there’s three options.
The first is to remove the “no guns allowed” sticker and allow concealed carry in the building.
The second is provide metal detectors or wands and personnel at each public entrance.
The third is to establish a security plan for the buildings.
If a plan is established, the municipality will be exempt from the regulation for four years.
In other business, final action on the re-zoning of property owned by Benedictine College may occur.
Vice Mayor Allen Reavis will be making a motion to take the matter off the table Monday.
If approved, plans will be able to move forward in construction of baseball and softball fields north of Larry Wilcox Stadium.
The meeting begins at 4:30 at City Hall.
