(KAIR) -- The official completion and opening of the four-lane configuration of the Amelia Earhart Bridge in Atchison has been moved back.
Sometime during the day on Monday, weather permitting, both eastbound and westbound US-59 traffic over the Amelia Earhart Bridge will be opened to the final traffic configuration across the new bridge.
KDOT says due to mechanical issues with the pavement striper, the opening of the bridge to its final four-lane traffic configuration caused the re-schedule from Friday to Monday.
Traffic over the new bridge will open to four-lanes beginning on the Atchison side of the state line and will be reduced back to a two-lane configuration once drivers are closer to the Missouri state line.
There is still not a tentative final schedule for the demolition of the old Amelia Earhart Bridge at this point in time.
Also, U.S. 59 through the city of Atchison was also recently resurfaced and city crews hope to also apply the permanent pavement markings on this stretch of highway beginning on Monday.
