(KLZA) -- Mound City School Board members voted Wednesday night to adopt a resolution supporting Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s veto of House Bill 253, a tax cut bill facing a veto override vote in the Missouri Legislature next month.
Backers of the tax cut bill say the cuts in business taxes will encourage business development, which will generate more taxes that will pay for improvement to state services.
Associated Industries, a key business group in writing the bill Missouri Governor Jay Nixon vetoed, says the cuts will total only about 50-million dollars, not the 800-milion or more the Governor claims.
Mound City Superintendent Ken Eaton explained the projected cut for the Mound City School District if the bill goes into effect would be $320,000 over 10 years. He noted that $32,000 a year is equivalent to the pay for one teacher.
Eaton said more cuts don’t make sense to him when schools are being given higher standards for students to meet.
After a lengthy discussion the Mound City Board voted to approve a resolution supporting the Governors veto, declaring the bill to be bad for the Mound City School District.
