(KNZA)--Enrollment is down in Prairie Hills USD 113 this school year.
Superintendent Dr. Bill Orth told the board of education this week that the district’s full-time equivalency enrollment is down about 34 students over last year to 1,079.
The entire decrease came at the Sabetha schools, which saw a FTE drop of almost 41 students. The Axtell, Summerfield and Wetmore schools saw a slight enrollment increase.
Meanwhile, Orth says the district is preparing for the 2015-2016 school year when the district is expected to face a projected budget shortfall of $260,000 to $300,000
Orth says cost cutting measures taken so far—including the closing of the Bern school and switch from a block to traditional schedule at Sabetha schools—have resulted in a total net savings of about $900,000.
Following a closed-door session, the board accepted the resignation of Axtell/Summerfield Principal Bob Bartkoski, effective June 30th, 2014.
Lucas Dalinghaus, a teacher and coach at the Axtell school, was hired to replace Bartkoski, with his salary to be negotiated.
