(KTNC) - A longtime civic leader, and former Mayor of Humboldt, has died. John Stalder passed away Monday at a Lincoln hospital at the age of 85.
Stalder was a Humboldt native, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1946 and the University of Nebraska in 1951. After traveling extensively through the United States and Canada, he returned to Humboldt in 1953 to help his father and uncle Gilbert run the Stalder Brothers Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment and Studebaker Car Dealership.
Stalder Brothers got the contract to sell Ford automobiles in 1957, and John continued to operate Stalder Brothers Ford until 2000.
Stalder served two terms on the Humboldt City Council in the 1960s and three terms as Mayor, from 1998 to 2010.
He was a 57-year member of the Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department, including five years as chief, and an EMT with the Humboldt Volunteer Ambulance Squad for five years.
He also was a member of several service clubs and organizations, including serving on the Humboldt Foundation Board, the Southeast Nebraska Economic Development District Association and Development District, and the Southeast District Health Department.
In 2006, he was crowned King of the Richardson County Free Fair.
John Stalder is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughters Angela, Beth, and Heidi, and five grandchildren.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Humboldt.
