(KTNC)--The University of Missouri Extension is trying to determine the extent of Goss’s Wilt in northwest Missouri Counties. Farmers who suspect the disease in their fields are encouraged to submit samples through their local Extension office to be sent to the University of Missouri Plant Diagnostic lab.
Goss’s Wilt is a bacterial infection that affects corn and popcorn crops. It has been found before in Nebraska and Iowa, and has been discovered in two fields in Holt County.
Symptoms of Goss’s wilt may resemble Stewarts’ Wilt, another bacterial disease…or they may resemble drought, nutrient deficiencies, or chemical injury.
Lab testing costs $15, which includes checking for symptoms and examining for bacterial streaming. Additional tests will be done at no cost for the remainder of 2014.
Samples can be brought to local extension offices, or can be submitted directly to the Plan Diagnostic lab. Go to the website, plantclinic.missouri.edu for instructions on how to properly package and submit samples.
