Contract negotiations between the Holton school board and the district’s teachers will move to the fact-finding stage.
The two sides recently declared an impasse in contract negotiations for the current school year. Currently, Holton teachers are working under last school year’s contract.
Last week, negotiators for both sides meet with a federal mediator, but were not able to come to a consensus on the remaining unresolved issues.
As a result, contract negotiations will now move to the fact-finding stage.
The Kansas Department of Labor will appoint a fact-finder to meet with the two sides. Within ten days after that meeting, the fact-finder will give his or her non-binding opinion on the matter. After that, the two sides will meet one more time to work out a new salary agreement. If no new agreement is reached, then the board has the option to offer unilateral contracts.
The two sides can still meet on their own to resolve the salary dispute also.
The Holton school district also went to the fact-finding stage of contract negotiations in 2008.
